Morphology: Evergreen tree, up to 30 m high, branchlets, petioles and lower surface of leaves densely brown tomentellate. Leaves thickly coriaceous, elliptic, oblong-elliptic or obovate-elliptic, 10-20 X 4-10 cm, petioles without stipular trace. Flowers white, fragrant, 15-20 cm in diameter, perianth lobes 9-12; gynoecium sessile. Aggregate fruits cylindrical-ellipsoidal, 5 cm in diameter, densely hairy.

Distribution: A native of southeastern America; cultivated in the area south of Changjiang River in China.

Uses: It is a very beautiful ornamental tree planted in gardens. The leaf is medicinally of essential oil. The wood is yellowish-white, hard and heavy, and can be used as decoration-wood.
